Irlen Syndrome: Seeing the World Differently

You may have noticed some people wearing unusually coloured lenses that aren’t sunglasses (e.g. yellow, pink, or purple). This is often not a fashion statement. It is more likely that the person has Irlen syndrome. Helen Irlen’s method was developed to help adults and children with reading and learning disabilities. She discovered that prescribed coloured lenses are a very effective solution for a visual system under stress.

Not everyone sees the world in the same way. For people with Irlen syndrome, the printed page can seem to have a mind of its own.

It can wave,

seesaw,

form rivers,

or other strange behaviour.

Here is a link where you can look at different things that people see. Close to the top of the page you can also play with the background colour and find which is most comfortable for your eyes. Personally, I like the green best.

As one sufferer explained to me, an extraordinary amount of energy is needed just to make the print on the paper stay still and that’s even before you try to make sense of it. This is not a problem with eye sight. It happens because of the way the brain is processing visual information, which is influenced by light and colour.

As well as having trouble reading, people with this visual processing challenge can experience higher than normal levels of:

  • fatigue

  • light sensitivity

  • eye strain

  • trouble concentrating and sitting still

  • falling asleep while reading

  • trouble with comprehension

  • struggle with academic and work performance

  • poor depth perception

  • low motivation

  • low self-esteem

If any of this sounds like it could be you, finding someone who can diagnose and explain exactly what is happening could be a huge relief. Finding the right colour lenses to filter information on the way to the brain can be a life changer.

Finding a way to help identify and rebalance specific issues related to the brain’s visual processing system adds another level of change and resolution. That’s where I can help as a kinesiologist with training in Brain Integration which addresses these issues.
