Untangling Survival Patterns

We know about our DNA – it’s the building blocks of who we are – thousands of genes encoding for thousands of proteins and enzymes that make and maintain our physical body.

We know less about the material around the DNA – it’s called the epigenetic material and it’s at the frontier of the newer research related to physical and emotional long term health.

One of the observations is that this epigenetic material appears to be a library of the experiences of our ancestors – the people who were living our DNA before they passed it on to us. The preservation of this information seems to be related to natural selection and the survival of the species. These learned experiences should be improving our own chances of passing on successful patterns of DNA to our children.

They are meant to give us a head start on the major lessons of life. But tangled in there are also the unresolved issues of life. I've learned a lot about this from exploring Family Constellations Therapy which shows that things too big, traumatic or complicated for the person to understand and know how to handle, just get passed along to the next generation.

I’ve been trying to understand this as I work with my clients to shift entrenched patterns that aren’t helping them live a happy healthy life. What it looks like to me is that we each have a huge library of life stories and patterns inherited from our ancestors that are unconsciously available to us. The problem is that the most resilient and persistent patterns are about survival, not about being able to live a long, happy, healthy life.

The outcome is that we can find ourselves living something that seems to have nothing to do with us – out of the blue we feel sad for no reason, we feel there is a cause we have to fight for, a calling that can’t be ignored, or we constantly fail and are never able to find our way to success. Looking back through the family tree may bring to light that we are repeating generational patterns rather than having the freedom to live the life we choose.

It’s similar to the brain’s hardwired primitive reflexes that make sure babies will suck, crawl, stand and walk in a predictable pattern. Primitive reflexes are hardwired in for the long term, but we’re finding that the ‘How to Survive and Pass on DNA Experience’ is programming that can be adjusted and changed from generation to generation.

Kinesiology is a tool that can help us recognise and understand these old inherited patterns. Recognising and understanding the patterns can help but often we need to go further than that. We need to untangle and resolve the issues and traumas, so we can be free to live a fulfilled, happy life. Happily Kinesiology also assists in the untangling and resolution, making way for change, freedom and choice.
